Yesterday was Sunday, and I decided I needed to go grocery shopping after church since my morning sickness had held off a bit. Since I don’t have much of a choice in small town Texas, I ventured into Walmart (I HATE Walmart… yes, I mean HATE). I finished my shopping pretty quickly and got in line to check out. There was a woman in front of me who was probably around 50 years old. In front of her was a dad and teenage daughter. After the dad & daughter had checked out and left, the 50-yr-old woman conversed with the female cashier. I guess they must’ve overheard a conversation between the dad & daughter, because they were discussing how disrespectful the teen was (yes, this is where I started eavesdropping). The woman then said to the cashier, “yeah, I’m so glad I didn’t have any kids. I had my tubes tied when I was 29.” (my thought was – “I’m 29 and pregnant with my first child. Be careful who hears your conversations, lady!”) She then stated, “I have a dog and a cat that fulfill me more than a child ever would.” (I really wanted to speak up, but I just listened since I wasn’t technically invited into the conversation).
The cashier says, “I had 2 kids and, trust me, you’re not missing out on anything.” HOLY COW! Are you kidding me, lady? This scene was just so funny to me. They continued on about how kids aren’t worth it. I was getting slightly annoyed and a bit impatient, since their conversation was slowing down the checking process. Anyway, once it was my turn to check out, I was semi-hoping the cashier would notice my already-expanding belly. I’m pretty sure she looked directly at it… a couple of times. It would’ve been fun to be inside her head at that moment. She probably would’ve never guessed that the next person checking out would be pregnant with a first child… Lesson learned for her, maybe? Hopefully so. Be careful what you say… you never know who’s listening.
Moms will love this one…

That is ridiculous! I wish you would have said while pointing to your belly, “Should I trade in my first-born for a dog or cat?”
That would be so frustrating!
That’s so sad. Children are a blessing and a gift. How we raise and TRAIN them makes such a big difference in whether they are a delight, though. The checker must have been going through some difficult times with hers…
I can’t believe you hate walmart! That’s ok I like Target better anyways.
I think a good preggie bump was called for there.
